What we aim to solve

Every year in North Carolina, approximately 500 young adults age out of the foster care system, many of whom lack the resources, support, and skills necessary for independent living. They face an increased risk of homelessness, untreated illness, unemployment, and other negative consequences. Housing, in particular, is a significant challenge, with an estimated 25% of these individuals experiencing homelessness within four years of exiting the foster care system.

How it all started: Hear from our Founder

Lynette-Social-4

In my early years, my family confronted significant challenges as my parents separated, placing a substantial financial burden on my mother. As a single parent with five children, she couldn't afford a separate bedroom for each of us, leading to my older siblings having their own room while my younger brothers and I shared a pull-out couch in the living room. Our struggles intensified with a devastating house fire and an eviction, which left our belongings scattered on the front lawn upon returning from school. The heartbreak of strangers rifling through our cherished possessions, taking some of our favorite toys, left an indelible mark. We became nomadic, moving frequently until I reached 7th grade.

Tragedy struck again at 15 when my mother passed away, leaving my younger brothers and me under the guardianship of our aunt. Unfortunately, her limited space meant I had to divide my time between my siblings' homes, sharing rooms as their families grew. On my 18th birthday, determined to forge my path, my boyfriend and I moved into his parents' basement.

However, the promise of independence quickly shattered during a domestic violence dispute, leaving me with a black eye and a minor concussion. Seeking refuge, my uncle came to my aid. Temporarily staying at my grandmother's house, where my father, uncle, and aunt resided, provided a room but not the autonomy I craved. Empowered by my grandmother and father, who helped me secure a job, I found available apartments for rent through the newspaper listings.

Navigating the intimidating process of apartment applications was eased by the kindness of a woman at the low-income housing office who recognized my need for assistance. Overcoming limiting beliefs rooted in my dyslexia, I faced the challenges head-on. Through divine intervention and the grace of God, as I filled out the application, a call came to the front desk, aligning perfectly with my specifications.

Guided by a spiritual connection and an unwavering intention to carve out a place to call my own, I experienced elevated emotions of gratitude, satisfaction, appreciation, freedom, faith, love, and hope. Once I took inspired actions and trusted a power greater than myself, God and the Universe created opportunities. The willingness and commitment of people sharing their resources and the inspiration drawn from others transformed my life.
